guest books

Digitize your visitor guest book, old pages too.

Photograph each page with any phone, right in the browser, or upload scans and PDFs. Public Lands Log reads the names, hometowns and dates, about 20 entries a page, in seconds. Your staff check each row against the original page before anything counts.

how it works

From a page of handwriting to numbers you can use.

  1. Photograph or uploadOpen Public Lands Log on any phone and photograph the page right in the browser. No app to install. Or upload photos, scans and PDFs from a computer, several files at a time.
  2. Check each rowEach name, hometown and date sits next to the photo of the page. Your staff fix anything that was misread, add anyone who was missed, and publish the page.
  3. See it countedPublished entries show up in your monthly counts, your origin map and your funder exports, labeled as guest-book entries.
what it reads

Names, hometowns and dates.

Handwriting can be misread, so nothing counts until a person on your staff has compared each row with the page and published it.

Names

Written the way the visitor wrote them. A family or a group that signed on one line stays one entry. Names stay in your account and are never shown publicly.

Hometowns

A town and state, a ZIP code or a country. Hometowns become your map of where visitors came from and the distance figures funders ask for, such as how many traveled 50 miles or more.

Dates

The visit date written on the page, so each entry lands in the right month, even from an old book. Dates that look wrong are flagged for your staff to check.

old pages count too

Yes, every year you have.

Photograph last season's book, or ten years of them, the same way as this week's page. Each entry keeps the date written on it, so old visits land in the right months and years.

A national historic trail added 151 guest-book sheets covering 2024 to 2026, and its staff checked a new batch of 38 sheets the same afternoon they came in.

Standard includes 1,000 old pages in your first year and Small includes 300. More are $99 for each 1,000, one time. If you have years of guest books in boxes, we can take in the whole archive. Ask us how.

no guest book?

Print ours.

From your dashboard, print blank sign-in sheets with your logo and put them out at the desk. They're made to be photographed and read back in, just like a page from your own book.

Volunteers can help too: send them an upload link and they can add pages without an account. Your staff still check every row before it counts.

good photos

Four tips for pages that read well.

One whole page at a time

Fill the frame with a single page, edges included, and keep it flat on a table.

Good light, no shadows

Daylight or an overhead light works. Make sure you can read the handwriting in the photo yourself.

Enter the dates in the book

When you upload, use the dates written on the pages, not today's date, so old visits land in the right months.

Phone photos, scans or PDFs

JPG, PNG, HEIC and the other common photo formats work, and so do PDFs of up to 10 pages. Split longer PDFs into parts.

Start with one page from your guest book.

Request access and we'll email you an invitation. Then add your site and photograph a page; the names and hometowns are read in seconds. No call, no app to install, no card.
